Cut up tomatoes and froze to can salsa later. Noticed that onions were on sale for a really good price. Was wondering if anyone froze cut up onions and then used them to can with later?
  • Patricia Stover I have cut up onions and frozen them for later use but never tried canning w/ them later. Also, they sell frozen onions at the store.
  • Cherie Antin Fasbinder I’ve never done it, but think it would be fine
  • Pam D’Eon-Nickerson Never froze any before, I usually make salsa.
  • Alice Corwin McCliggott I have froze chopped onions, also peppers…Chop first!! Great!!
  • MaryJane Losey I freeze onions whenever they are on sale. Chop them up in food processor,
  • Serena Adkins Ellison if you freeze them you need to double bag them because you run the risk of getting the onion smell, taste, in other items in the freezer if you don’t make sure they are double protected!!
  • Amanda Pegram Clyburn I freeze mine in ice cube trays. After they are frozen, I put them in a double freezer bag. That way, I always have a small portion if I ever need it. Oh, a little water or chicken broth, just a few drops in each cube, help it hold together.
  • Serena Adkins Ellison ohhhhh AMANDA that is AWESOME!!!! I am going to try the ice cube tray trick!!!!!
  • Amanda Pegram Clyburn If you want, you can pour beef broth over a tray of onions, and chicken over another….
  • Serena Adkins Ellison thanks Amanda Pegram Clyburn I am definitely going to dry the cube tray thing I saw that for other things, like for instance you can freeze your chicken broth that way and put it into baggie, but I never even T HOUGHT of doing chopped onions that way, so it would be measured ect.. pretty cool!!!!
