Old Time Applesauce Cake

Sauce..
3 c reg applesauce
1/2 to a cup of sugar
cup raisins
tsp allspice
cinn
chunked apples or (1 cup of home canned chunky applesauce)

Cake
1 cup butter (two sticks)
2 cups sugar
3 cups self rising flour
2 eggs
1 1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinn
1/2 tsp soda
2 1/2 cups applesauce
2 tsp white Karo syrup
1 cup raisins
1 cup chopped english walnuts (optional)

300 degrees 2 hours or less.. every oven is different use toothpick and watch NOTE this is old recipe ovens are better now…

  • Tammy Vaughn I have a couple of questions…In the recipe is that baking soda and cinn 1 tsp. and the next question is do you wait for the cake to cool before you pour the sauce on top of the cake

    Gona have to show this one to my Mom. I think we have everything in the kitchen to make this and it really sounds good. She has been wanting to make a cake for a few days now and just keeps putting it off til she “feels” better. But, I think this is just the thing she needs to get her motivated!

  • Serena Adkins EllisonTammy it is cinnamon.. and baking soda… and Mom said it is already a very moist cake so NO you wait until the cake has cooled some before putting the sauce over or it may fall apart she said ..make your sauce while your cake is baking.. then the idea is to let the cake cool.. cause it is a VERY moist cake.. (at least is should be) then put on the sauce..dad likes the cake plain too …. but usually the kids can’t wait and we go ahead and pour the sauce on and eat it warm cause we don’t care if it looks pretty and caves in (like the pic above) but if your taking somewhere like to church you should wait till cools and then put on sauce.. make sure you taste your sauce and it is sweet enough. I sometimes after cake is cook cut the cake in half and put some in the middle of cake and over top as well
