THE DONUT  written by Serena Adkins Ellison on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 12:34am ·

The Donut

How long I stood there

I do not know.

My eyes bulge out

and my anticipation grows

Yet I can not choose

the one to fill the last spot

my eyes dart back and forth

as the lady looks at the clock

I finally tell her

to give me the one to the right

she sighs with relief

with her lips pressed tight

I grab my box

and head for the door

like a drug addict

I can’t wait for my score

In the car

the kids are waiting for me

everyone gets quite

and stretches to see

“What kind did you get”

they squeal with delight

I smile like it’s Christmas

as we take our first bite
