This is the classic Red Velvet Cake with vinegar in it.

RED VELVET CAKE RED VELVET CAKE

  • ½ cup Crisco

    1 ½ cup sugar

    2 eggs

    1 tsp. salt

    1 tsp. soda

    1 tsp. vanilla

    2 Tsp. cocoa

    1 Tsp. white vinegar

    2 cups plain flour

    1 cup buttermilk

    2 oz. red food coloring

    Cream together:

    Crisco and sugar

    ADD eggs and beat well.

    SIFT together:

    Flour

    Cocoa

    Salt

Add sifted mixture to cake alternately with buttermilk. Beat for 1 minute.

Add vanilla and red food coloring.

MIX together soda and vinegar and add to cake batter by hand.

Bake @ 350 degrees in preheated oven for 35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

I use a bundt pan or if you want a 2 layer cake, you can use to round pans. I spray mine with the cooking spray that has flour in it.

    ICING:

    Part 1:

Blend 1 cup milk into ¼ cup flour and cook until thick. Add a pinch of salt and set aside to cool completely.

    Part 2:

    Cream together:

    1 cup sugar

    ½ cup Crisco

    1 Tbsp vanilla

Add to Part 1 beating at high speed until fluffy. Frost cake and sprinkle with angel flake coconut.

***Kathy, I think this icing is kinda bland, I prefer to use cream cheese frosting but I wanted to give you the original icing recipe for this cake.
