1/4 c vegetable shortening (not oil)

1 cake or pkg of yeast

1 c milk

1 tsp salt

1/4 c sugar

1 egg

3 1/2 c sifted flour

Crisco Shortening for deep frying 

Heat milk slightly. add yeast and dissolve. Add 1/2 cups flour and beat till smooth. Cover and let rise in warm place till doubled in bulk.

Cream shortening salt and sugar together. Add egg and blend. Stir this mixture into yeast sponge. Add remaining flour and beat well. Rub top with shortening and let rise again, till doubled in bulk 

Roll bout 1/2 inch thick on floured board and cut with doughnut cutter. Allow to rise about 45 minutes then fry in deep shortening heated to 365 degrees. Fry till brown about 3 min you will need to turn the doughnuts once.. you can usually tell when they are ready to come out of the oil. Sprinkle with sugar or dip in glaze made with confectioners sugar and water… makes about 2 dozen.. very good
