SUGAR & SPICE CAKE WITH CARAMEL ICING

2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cloves

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp allspice

3/4 c shortening

1 c firmly packed brown sugar

3/4 c granulated sugar

4 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1 c buttermilk

sift flour, soda, spices, salt together

cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs one at a time beating till light.

add vanilla.

alternately add flour mixture and milk.

beat well after each addition. blend well, pour into 2 greased floured 9 inch pans. Bake 350 degrees 35-40 minutes

Caramel Icing

1 cup brown sugar

3 tbsp crisco

2 tbsp butter

1/4 tsp salt

1/3 c milk

cook above ingredients till mixture bubbles.

boil one minute, remove from heat and cool till lukewarm.

add q 1/2 cups confectionary sugar.

blend well then spread on the sugar and spice cake.
