We have all eaten  Strawberry Shortcake.. most of us Sponge Cake, Strawberries and Whipped Cream comes to mind when you hear the term.

But the Original Strawberry Shortcake was actually made with Shortbread (un-cut biscuits that you added sugar to and turned into a square pan). Grandma would take strawberries and mash them.. some were mashed good with juice coming out and some were still chunky.

Then she would add sugar to the strawberries and serve them over top the warm shortbread. She then poured milk over them if desired.. Mom said she had this dish many times growing up. It is an old recipe that has taken on a life of it’s own over time.. but THIS is the original Strawberry Shortcake =)

Grandma’s Strawberry Shortcake

3 cups self rising flour

3 tbsp granulated sugar

1/2 tsp baking powder (optional)

put bowl in sink and turn on faucet .. add a bit of water and stir with fork  till mixed thick.. do not over mix..

then pour in a bit of veg oil (we don’t measure) could be about a tbsp or more of oil

stir and turn out onto floured counter top

Heat oven to 400 degrees and drop a 1/2 stick of butter in pan put in oven to melt butter

pat down lightly with hands and make square shape out of your dough

put into hot buttered pan carefully

and sprinkle sugar over top of the dough.

put into oven and bake about 20 minutes.. (watch it everyones is different) then at the last turn onto broil to brown the top of your shortcake.

To prepare the strawberries follow directions below!

Strawberries for Shortcake

you can use fresh or  thawed frozen strawberries, either will work just fine

you will cut off the tops of the fresh, wash them and slice

NOW your ready to mash them

Take some sugar (granulated) and pour over strawberries and mash.. you will have some chunks and some mush.. you want them to be juicy.

Now time to serve up your yummy shortcake!

Take some sweet short cake or biscuit and crumble in a bowl

pour some strawberries over top

now pour a tad of milk over top (should be sweet enough but some of us still add more sugar LOL)

You can also serve this dish as a dessert with ICE CREAM or heavy whipped cream.. it is as good as a cobbler
