We definitely make sure we plant onions every year.

They are easy to plant using the bulbs and putting root side down in dirt.. although my son here is placing them too close together LOL.. but you get the idea .. I hadn’t the heart to tell him to redo them.. his was going to be eaten when small anyways but if your wanting to grown big onions you will need some spacing between..

Onions grow very well and easy to harvest.  (most of the time if they aren’t too deep LOL)  let them grow big

if you want large onions    (notice the back row)

and then you simply step on the onion stem  and bend it to the side..

that way the growth will focus on the ball of the onion instead of the green stems (people here in the south call the stems green onions) we like to chop the stems (green onions) over salads, or eat them with bean dinners ect.. very good.

When harvesting your onions you need to pick a hot sunny day and rinse your onions off  lightly with water (a lot of folks don’t but I do) Then take them and let them set out in the  hot sun on like a picnic table or something to dry out make sure they are completely dry.. you can then hold one side of the onion firmly and with the other hand twist as you pull on remaining stem.. some of the stem will come off.

Once your done with this process and they are all completely DRY you then put them in a basket with HOLES like a crate and put them in a cool dark place.. like a basement or garage for storage. They should last you a good while if kept this way.
