Don’t throw out that hambone.. save it.. make sure you keep some meat on it too… put in ziplock baggie and into freezer until ready to use.

Serena’s Hot Hambone & Split Pea with Lentils Soup

1 meaty large hambone

put in crock pot with a little water and let cook… (or put in large stock pot and let boil) either way.

Then add 1 3lb can chicken broth

1/2 onion chopped

1/4 cup carrot cut fine

3 stalks celery with leaves chopped up

12oz bag of fresh broc and Cauliflower mix

Large amount of chopped cabbage

Push down and cover with water add salt and lot of pepper

put lid on and let cook (you should do this early in the morning or night before takes a long time to cook down)

now once veggies and all is cooked tender as can be and ham is falling off bone… you want to take all ham off bone and take OUT bone. (now you don’t have to do this but I took my bone out and saw it still had some meat and flavor on it so I put it in a pot on the stove added a little water and boiled it some more and took all that yummy flavor it gave off and added to my soup)

Add  handful of Potatoes sliced, add a tab of butter a pinch of thyme and 1 bayleaf.

1 cup or more of rinsed split pea

, 1 cup of rinsed lentils ,

crushed red pepper flakes

. put lid on till potatoes and lentils  soften..

take out bay leaf….

time now to take out blender or food processor and you will spoon out large chunks, leaving the ham and the potatoes in soup..

take out most large chunks of cabbage ect.. put into blender and pulse to paste.. pour back into the soup stir and take out more if you desire and puree.. I liked to  leave some large chunks of potatoes and broccoli may need to add more pepper stir and taste

done

must serve with hot SWEET  Cornbread to balance out the spice in the dish from the crushed red pepper.. delish!!!!  this dish isn’t the most beautiful dish, but looks aren’t everything.. this dish is really tasty
