FREEZING CORN CHOWDER?

QUESTION POSTED BY Rosetta Sperring
Does anyone know how corn chowder turns out after freezing it. I made a large crockpot of corn chowder and I need to freeze part of it, but I’ve never frozen corn chowder. I was wondering how the potatoes turn out, are they mushy after thawing, and does the milk in the chowder curdle after thawing.

  • Marla Patton Watson You can freeze it, but you dont want to re-heat it quickly like in a microwave, let it thaw then reheat it.
  • Marla Patton Watson Also want to freeze it in freezer bags. So it will hold longer in the freezer.
  • Rosetta Sperring Thanks Marla, maybe I’ll just take some to my elderly neighbor and won’t have to worry about freezing it. Thanks Marla!
  • Judith Parady Rice If you do freeze any-Please let me know if it freezes well.I never did freeze corn chowder. That’s what I do too. Mine are mostly all elderly.
  • Judith Parady Rice We didn’t want to be different….that’s why we bought the house.LOL
  • Rosetta Sperring Judith, I’m 60 so I guess I’m one of the elderly ones also! lol Okay, so they are both 80…got a ways to go, but you know how fast time flies! lol
  • Marla Patton Watson Thats a great idea, if you put your soup in canning jars and place in the refg you can keep in there for about two weeks without it going bad. I do this all the time, and any type of chowder is my favorite soup..
  • Rosetta Sperring I’ll let ou know how it turns out if I freeze it.
  • Judith Parady Rice So do you put the soup in the jars hot enough to seal Marla??
  • Judith Parady Rice I am 69 and the rest in our group are all much older. We have so much fun w/ them . I love them all so much. We have been in the Airstream club w/ them all for 20 some yrs. Yes please let me know if the soup freezes well.Thank you!
  • Marla Patton Watson I normally just put in the unused portion, I guess it would be warm from the stove top but not boiling, not sure if this is sealing the tops. but, It seems to work fine for me this way. I save all kinds of jars and put most of my left overs in jars, as I have learned food lasts longer in the refg this way.
  • Marla Patton Watson Plus they dont take up as much room as bulky containers.
  • Judith Parady Rice I do the same ! Do not like plastic unless it is cold when I fill the container.
  • Judith Parady Rice Thank you Marla.
  • Rosetta Sperring Wow Marla, you just taught me something new. I have never canned, but I do have a few mason canning jars we got at an auction. Why does food last longer in the canning jars? Do you have to do anything special to the jar?
  • Marla Patton Watson I dont really can either, Serena would be the one to answer that for you. But, no I just wash my jars over and over and reuse.
